Racist Christians: The South’s Greatest Oxymoron

I am a Southerner. It is an integral part of my identity that I cannot hide. My accent tells infinitely more about me in 30 seconds than I could ever hope to. I am a firm believer in sweet tea, kool-aid, fried chicken and yella paysta. I believe in ‘yes mam’ and ‘no mam’ and respect for my elders.

The older I get the more I am aware of the truly dangerous Southern mentality.

In the South, we do church on Sunday’s and Bible Study on Wednesday’s. We constantly ‘bless someone’s heart’ and we love the good Lawd.

But do we?

In the South we disagree with interracial marriages. We look down upon racial minorities and we have a zero tolerance policy for anyone that is not ‘Christian’.

Funny huh? It’s almost like we have NEVER read the Bible. It’s as if we are blind to the real teachings of Christ.

In the South the “N” word is rampant. We constantly degrade and debase each other. We look down upon difference.

Wow. Who are we?

It’s an oxymoron in itself that these actions have a stronghold on the hearts of those of us that live in the ‘Bible Belt’.

WHAT Bible are we reading?

In the South we LOVE to treat the Bible like TrailMix. We pick out what we want and we leave the rest. We love to gossip and share the failings of our neighbors but find it hard to share their successes. In the South we have a church on every corner because we can’t get along.

Dear Racist Southern Christian,

Grow up. I am not calling you to grow up because this is the 21st century. I am not calling you to grow up because this is 2015. I am calling you to grow up in your faith with Christ. As residents of the Bible Belt, as southerners, we are representing a culture that is not representative of the Bible. We are exasperating ideals and thoughts that are unholy, ungodly and just WRONG.

As Southerners, as believers, as ‘Christians’ we have the power to show the world the true love of Christ. But do we? With such an amazing support system and surrounding for those that supposedly love Christ, we should have the lowest rates of poverty, the highest rates of acceptance and love, the lowest rates of divorce… but do we?

Do you love the world as Christ has loved you? Christ does not pick out only what he likes about you. Christ loves us, sins and all. Christ does not love us because of the color of our skin. Chris does not love us only if we are rich.

Dear Racist Christian,

Be careful of your actions towards those that are different from you. What if God had treated you in that way? What if God looked at your skin color and assumed that you were lazy, dangerous and stupid. What if God looked at your clothes and walked past you because they were worn.

Racist Christian, be careful. Remember God’s second greatest commandment, “Love your neighbor as yourself”. Let me break that down, you probably live in a neighborhood where everyone looks like you. So how about love EVERYONE as you love yourself.

And one of my favoriteeeeeeeeeeee verses, 1 John 3:17. “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?”

Our world is in need Racist Christian, have you no pity for those around you who are suffering from oppression, racism, sexism and prejudice.

How can the love of God live in you?
